What is Vein Disease?

Vein disease develops when poor circulation causes blood to collect in the veins instead of flowing efficiently back to the heart. Leg vein disease, also known as chronic venous disease (CVD), is one of the most common vascular conditions. Because symptoms develop gradually, many people mistake them for a normal part of aging.

Healthy leg veins use one-way valves to move blood back to the heart. When these valves weaken, blood begins to pool in the legs, increasing pressure inside the veins. Over time, this can cause aching, heaviness, swelling, varicose veins, skin discoloration, and, in advanced cases, leg ulcers.
